Psychology Education In Kansas

Kansas is a state with excellent employment prospects for psychologists. Hence, if you are interested in this field of work, you should be able to find a job very quickly. Furthermore, you can expect to get very competitive pay and excellent work benefits. However, before you can get to work as a psychologist in the Sunflower State, you will need to make sure you meet all the necessary requirements in terms of education, experience and examination.

The state of Kansas, and in particular their Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board, want to make sure that every psychologist is fully qualified to deliver the highest quality of care. They must be able to shoulder the responsibilities that psychologists have to carry. This enables them to perform all the different duties, from assessing patients to diagnosing and treating them, to researching and developing new psychology theories. Unsurprisingly, a rich educational background will be required of you, as well as significant professional experience. The Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board has ensured that the steps that must be completed in order to become a psychologist in the state allow professionals to meet all these requirements and responsibilities.

Educational Requirements to Become a Licensed Psychologist in Kansas

The first step you must complete if you want to become a psychologist is to gain the relevant education. Kansas has determined that all psychologists must be educated to doctorate level, holding either a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. in psychology or in a very closely related field such as counseling psychology or educational psychology. Additionally, they have determined that the doctorate degree program must be accredited by the American Psychological Association.

To complete a doctorate degree, you must first complete a four-year bachelor's degree. This is followed by a two-year master's degree, and finally a two- to four-year doctorate degree. It is recommended that you choose an educational program that includes an internship, as you can count some or all of these hours towards the requirements for supervised professional experience.

Only those who want to become school psychologists are exempted from the doctorate rule. They only need to hold a master's degree in school psychology. However, you may still want to study toward a doctorate to diversify your career.

Careful consideration will need to be given to whether you want to complete a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. The latter is a program that focuses on clinical applications and direct patient contact. Although you will usually need to create and defend a thesis to graduate, this is not an overly in-depth thesis. By comparison, the Ph.D. is a research-based degree, which means you have to write and defend a thesis based on original research that will influence the field of psychology. A Ph.D. generally takes longer to complete but you will also find that grants and funding options are higher for this degree.

Supervised Professional Experience for Psychologists in Kansas

Kansas also requires psychologists to undergo supervised professional experience. All graduates must complete two full years of work experience, one of which can be the internship for the degree. However, the second year has to be completed post-graduation. One year equals 1,800 working hours. Furthermore, you must also spend 180 hours per year providing services that are non-clinical or general. These hours must be fully guided by a licensed and board approved psychologist.

Kansas Psychologist Licensure Examinations

Once you have completed your degree and your supervised working experience, you will be able to apply to be licensed with the board. You must do this at least eight weeks before actually taking the examination, as you will need board approval to register for this exam, and that can take some time. This is the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), which is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). It is a multiple choice examination consisting of 225 credits. A passing rate requires at least 70% correct answers and you will be scored on a scale of 500. The examination looks at various topics of importance to psychology, such as diagnosis, assessment, intervention and different basis of behavior. At the moment, the fee for this examination is $600, but this does change regularly. The test can be taken in a variety of different examination centers across Kansas.

The Career of a Psychologist in Kansas

Once you have met all the necessary requirements, it is time to get to work as a psychologist in Kansas. If you have completed a Ph.D., it is likely that you will start working in a research-based or education field. If, however, you have completed the Psy.D., you are likely to get to work directly with patients in a clinical setting.
