Psychology Education In Arizona

Arizona, which is also known as the Grand Canyon State, is a fantastic place for people who are interested in pursuing a career in psychology. There are great employment opportunities in transportation, health care and government agencies. The industry, according to the Arizona Department of Administration, is flourishing and projected to grow by 20.3% between 2010 and 2020. This means that if you were considering a career in the field, now is a really good time. Increased demand, after all, always leads to increased salaries as well.

If you do want to become a psychologist in Arizona, however, you will have to meet all the necessary requirements. The state has put these in place to make sure only the best people are responsible for the mental health of Arizonians. This, in turn, ensures a high quality of care.

Educational Requirements to Become a Licensed Psychologist in Arizona

Arizona state laws demand that all prospective psychologists are educated to doctorate degree level in psychology. Institutions and schools are accepted by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners so long as they are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). Some programs that are not APA accredited may still be accepted, so long as the curriculum meets the necessary requirements. Additionally, the degree program must have included a 1,500 hour minimum internship, which demonstrates practical experience and competency.

To complete a doctorate program, students must first obtain a bachelor's degree, which takes four years to complete. After the bachelor's degree, they must complete a two-year master's degree. At that point, it may be valuable to speak to a career adviser, as you will need to choose between completing a Psy.D. or a Ph.D. in psychology at doctorate level. The Ph.D. is largely a research-based degree and will require you to complete and defend an original research thesis. It usually takes at least four years to complete a Ph.D. A Psy.D., by contrast, is more focused on clinical work and direct patient contact. Although it is also required to defend a thesis, this is much less in-depth. As a result, it can take as little as two years to complete a Psy.D. The consequence of this is that grants and financial awards for Ph.D.s tend to be higher than those for Psy.D.s.

Supervised Professional Experience for Psychologists in Arizona

All prospective psychologists must complete 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, 1,500 of which must be post-doctoral. To prove this, students must complete the Professional Psychology Experience Verification form. The internship that has been completed during the degree program can be included in supervised professional experience.

Arizona Psychologist Licensure Examinations

Once the requirement of supervised experience have been met, prospective psychologists can apply to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), which is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). The test consists of 225 multiple choice questions, and a pass rate is awarded if at least 70% of the questions have been answered accurately. The exam covers the following core areas of psychology:

  • Biological Bases of Behavior
  • Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior
  • Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior
  • Growth and Lifespan Development
  • Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Treatment, Intervention, Prevention and Supervision
  • Research Methods and Statistics
  • Ethical, Legal and Professional Issues

The current cost for this exam is $600, although this does change.

The Career of a Psychologist in Arizona

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are 2,120 psychologists employed in the state as of May 2014. Their salary varies greatly depending on their experience, the type of degree they have and where they work. The BLS has stated that:

  • Clinical, counseling and school psychologists earned an average of $61,710 per year
  • All other kinds of psychologists earned an average of $88,160 per year

It is important to understand that these numbers are averages. This means that half of all psychologists earn more than that amount, and the other half earns less.

It is also here that we see the greatest difference between the two different doctorate degree programs. Those with a Ph.D. are more likely to work in research centers, or they will work in education, having little to no contact with patients. Those with a Psy.D., however, will provide direct patient care in a variety of health care settings.
