Texas Psychology Requirements

Texas is one of the best places to get to work in as a psychologist because demand is incredibly high. Indeed, according to the Texas Workforce Commission, a growth of 23.7% is expected in the field between 2012 and 2020. As a result, salaries are highly competitive and applicants are also attracted through a range of other interesting benefits. As a result, if you meet all the requirements for psychologists in Texas, finding a job should be quite easy. However, the Lone Star State does have some incredibly strict requirements for those who want to hold a psychology license.

These requirements have been put in place in order to make sure that only the most knowledgeable are able to offer treatment to Texans. All psychologists will have taken part in a supervised experience session, where they will learn how to work directly with patients. Additionally, they may offer this experience to new graduates later on while learning more from this experience. The goal is to ensure that proper mental health care can be given to all residents of Texas. Additionally, the experience proves that someone is ready to take on the particular responsibilities and stresses that are encountered in this career.

Educational Requirements to Become a Licensed Psychologist in Texas

Earning a psychology license in Texas starts by graduating from a psychology doctorate program. There are various universities to choose from where this can be completed. Those who want to become school psychologists are exempt from the doctoral rule. Rather, they need to have completed a master's degree and they must pass the National School Psychologist Examination.

The recommended pathway towards completing a doctorate degree is to start with a four year bachelor's program. After this, students can take part in a two year master's program, after which it will take two years to complete a doctorate. Without the master's degree, a doctorate would take at least four years to finish. All doctorate degrees include an internship or other period of supervised working, which counts towards the requirements of supervised experience for licensing.

Supervised Professional Experience for Psychologists in Texas

In order to become licensed as a psychologist in Texas, you must complete two years of supervised professional experience. One year of this can be obtained during completion of the doctoral program. However, the other year must be completed after the doctorate degree. The work experience has to be supervised by a fully licensed psychologist.

Texas Psychologist Licensure Examinations

Besides education and supervised experience, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) also require students to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), which is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). This is a 225 multiple choice examination, of which 175 questions are marked. This test is nationally recognized, and you must seek approval from the Board. The cost of the exam currently stands at $600 and examinees have 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete it.

Additionally, prospective psychologists must pass the Jurisprudence Examination. This test is made up of 100 multiple choice questions that cover a broad range of topics, including professional practice rules, Board procedures and composition, professional guidelines and more. Once the multiple choice component has been completed, they must also pass an oral examination that is delivered by a TSBEP representative.

The Career of a Psychologist in Texas

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were over 6,000 psychologists employed in the state as of May 2013. Their salaries varied greatly depending on the area of practice, their employers, their years of experience and their additional training. As such:

  • Clinical, counseling and school psychologists, of whom there were 5,580, earned an average annual salary of $62,160. This expresses a 2.1% growth since the last count in 2011. The workforce has grown by 4.1% in the same time period.
  • All other psychologists, of whom there were 630, earned an average annual salary of $86,150, which is a 1.4% growth. The workforce grew by 2.2%.

It is important to understand that an average annual salary means that half of all psychologists earn less than that, whereas the other half earn more. Interestingly, the BLS has not yet made a distinction in organizational and industrial psychologists in Texas. Nationally, this is the fastest growing area of psychology. It is expected that a separate category will be included in the next BLS counting to reflect this growth.
