Psychology Education In New York

Psychologists are needed in New York, just as in any other state. However, demand is not growing as quickly as in other states. According to the New York State Department of Labor, demand will grow by around 4.6% between 2008 and 2018. Opportunities will be available in research facilities, health care settings, teaching and lecturing facilities and more. Other openings will exist in private practices.

As a psychologist, you need to have the knowledge and experience required for the assessment and diagnosis of a mental illness. This type of illness can significantly reduce the quality of someone's life. Your role will be to help people regain control over their lives and become happy once again. This includes creating achievable goals through a treatment plan and guiding your patients on their road to recovery. This is a huge responsibility and the state of New York has determined that this means psychologists have to demonstrate education, experience and examination. These requirements are very strict, but they are in place for a very good reason.

Educational Requirements to Become a Licensed Psychologist in New York

If you want to become a psychologist in New York, you must be educated to doctorate degree level. This program must be classed as "licensure qualifying" by the Department. Additionally, there is a strong focus on child abuse, and all psychologists must undertake training in this in order to be able to recognize the signs. They must also be able to meet the requirements for Child Abuse Identification Reporting.

To obtain a doctorate degree, you must first complete a four year bachelor's degree program, followed by a two year master's. After that, you will need to choose between the different doctorate degree programs, leading to either a Psy.D. or Ph.D. As there are different programs out there, the completion time varies as well and ranges from between three to seven years. In many cases, you will also have to complete a residency or internship as part of your degree program.

School psychologists are exempted from the doctorate requirement. They must obtain a master's degree with a school psychology focus. Additionally, they must complete two years of supervised professional experience.

Supervised Professional Experience for Psychologists in New York

During your degree program, you will start to gain supervised professional experience. The New York State Office of the Professions has determined that at least 3,500 hours (two years full time) of supervised professional experience must be obtained overall. Only 1,750 of these hours can be obtained during your degree program, the other half must be completed afterwards. The hours that are completed while you are studying towards your doctorate must also meet the following requirements:

• It is an internship, practicum, piece of applied research or field experience approved by the university and the research is separate from the thesis or dissertation.
• It may involve teaching at college or university, so long as this meets all the requirements as set by the state.

The second year, as stated, must be post-doctoral. Additionally, it must meet the laws and statutes as described in Section 601-A of the Education Law of New York.

New York Psychologist Licensure Examinations

The final step before you can become licensed is to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), which is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). It is a test that consists of 225 multiple choice questions and you must answer at least 70% of these correctly in order to pass. The test focuses on nationally agreed standards and the eight core elements of psychology. These are:

• Biological Bases of Behavior
• Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior
• Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior
• Growth and Lifespan Development
• Assessment and Diagnosis
• Treatment, Intervention, Prevention and Supervision
• Research Methods and Statistics
• Ethical, Legal and Professional Issues

The test currently costs $600 to take part in, although this is subject to change.

The Career of a Psychologist in New York

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were some 11,340 psychologists employed in the state as of May 2014. The BLS has created the following subdivisions for these professionals:

• Clinical, counseling and school psychologists earned an average of $85,130 per year, an increase of 1.9%. The industry has grown by 3.4% in this field.
