Psychology Education In California

California is the largest employer of psychologists by numbers in the country. Additionally, significant growth is expected between 2012 and 2022. The salaries of psychologists are some of the highest in the country as well, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This makes it a very interesting state to start work as a psychologist in.

The field of psychology is hugely important, as it ensures Californians are able to enjoy good mental health. This is only possible through properly qualified psychologists, however. As a result, the state has implemented a number of stringent criteria for those who want to become licensed as a psychologist.

Educational Requirements to Become a Licensed Psychologist in California

According to the California Board of Psychology, all prospective psychologists must hold a doctorate in psychology or related field (educational psychology or counseling psychology). The degree program must be fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.

School psychologists are exempt from the doctorate rule. They must hold a bachelor's degree as a minimum from an accredited institution. Additionally, they must satisfy the State of California basic skills requirement. Furthermore, they must complete 60 hours of degree study at post baccalaureate level through a program that is approved by the board, and these hours must focus on school psychology.

Obtaining a doctorate degree starts with a four-year bachelor's program, followed by a two-year master's degree program. At this point, you will need to choose between completing a research-based Ph.D., which generally takes around four years, or a practice-based Psy.D., which generally takes around two years.

Supervised Professional Experience for Psychologists in California

If you want to work as a psychologist in California, you will need to complete 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience over the course of two years. This means that you will be taking part in an organized program that focuses on clinical training. It can include didactic exposure, mentoring, consultative guidance (clerical duties) and role-modeling. Of these 3,000 hours, at least half must be completed after graduation. The rest can be made up through internship, for instance. Additionally, there are time restrictions on how quick this experience must be completed after graduation, with the maximum being 30 months.

California Psychologist Licensure Examinations

California is one of the few states that have two examinations in place for prospective psychologists. The first is the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) that is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). It consists of 255 multiple choice questions in:

  • Biological Bases of Behavior
  • Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior
  • Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior
  • Growth and Lifespan Development
  • Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Treatment, Intervention, Prevention and Supervision
  • Research Methods and Statistics
  • Ethical, Legal and Professional Issues

At least 70% of the questions must be answered correctly in order to receive a pass rate. This test is a national test and sets the standard for psychologists. It costs $600 to take part in it, although this cost does change regularly.

Once you have completed and passed your EPPP, you may then take the second examination, which is the California Psychology Supplemental Examination (CPSE). You can not apply to take this exam until you have completed the 3,000 hours of supervised working experience and you have passed the EPPP. The CPSE consists of 115 multiple choice questions based on scenarios. You have three hours to answer the questions.

The Career of a Psychologist in California

According to the BLS, there are currently almost 20,000 psychologists employed in the state of California. Their salaries vary greatly depending on their experience and area of work. As such, the BLS has stated that as of May 2014:

  • Clinical, counseling and school psychologists earn an average of $81,050 per year;
  • Industrial-organizational psychologists earn an average of $105,580 per year; and
  • All other psychologists earn an average of $89,550 per year.

Two things of importance with these figures. Firstly, as average salaries, they mean half of all psychologists earn less than that figure, and the other half earns more. Secondly, these figures are growing exponentially as demand continues to rise.

After you have completed your experience and tests and you are ready to enter the working field of psychology, you will truly start to notice the difference between the Ph.D. and the Psy.D.. If you hold a Ph.D., it is most likely that you work in research laboratories or schools. If you hold a Psy.D., however, you are most likely to work directly with patients in clinical settings such as hospitals.
